What is the chemical contents of car exhaust fumes?
I need to find the detailed chemical contents of car exhaust emissions for a project I am doing at university. I am studying BioEnterprise and I am designing a theoretical product to cut car emissions. I have a basic knowledge of the contents:
-mostly Nitrogen;
-water vapour;
-Carbon Dioxide;
-some other trace compounds;
If someone knows a more detailed chemical analysis I would be very grateful (both with and without a catalytic converter).
This is a very vague question.
However here are few very useful points:
1. Exhaust depends on many factors – type of fuel, composition of fuel, ambient conditions, type of engine, rpm, load etc.
So, you’ll need to define and set conditions and standards. Like research most commonly used engines in the country, fuel avg. composition. You may get this data from the transport office and shell/bp for fuel analysis.
2. Research websites of manufactures – ford/VW etc to get data – they do have quite a lot!
3. Find out the emission standards – EURO 1/2/3/4/5. They set an upper limit.
4. Another very useful source would be garages who test these! Ask them for data. Promise them that you will mention them in report, and they should willing to let you access the data.
Categorizes the data and do detailed numerical analysis to find out mean/mode/median.
5. Search for papers on scholar google, sciencedirect, JSTOR etc – they have quite a lot that would interest you.
I am saying this as you are at Uni, these are the standards expected!
